What Is a Winch Out?
A winch out is the recovery of a vehicle that is stuck but not broken. We park our tow truck on firm ground, run a steel or synthetic line to a safe recovery point on your vehicle and slowly pull it back to pavement. Spinning the tires often digs the car in deeper, so it is best to stop and call.

Signs You Need a Winch Out
- Your wheels spin and the car does not move
- One or more wheels are off the pavement
- The car slid into a ditch or drainage cut
- You are stuck on a curb, median or parking block
- A truck sank into a soft yard or job site
How We Do It
- We look at the ground, the slope and where the vehicle is stuck.
- We set the tow truck on firm ground and attach to a safe point, never to a bumper or axle.
- We pull slowly and keep the line steady to avoid damage.
- Once the car is on solid ground, we check for damage and leaks.
If the car is damaged or will not drive, we can switch to Flatbed Towing or Accident Towing on the same visit.
Other Roadside Services
We also offer Battery Jump Start, Flat Tire Change, Gas Delivery and Car Lockout service.
Getting Stuck in Dallas
Dallas clay soil turns soft and slick after rain. Flash floods along the Trinity River, White Rock Creek and low streets can leave cars sitting in mud once the water goes down. Job sites in Deep Ellum, the Cedars and the Design District often have dirt lots that trap delivery trucks. In winter, ice on hills and ramps can push cars off the edge. Never drive into moving water, and call 911 if the car is in a flood.
Winch Out Cost
Winch out cost depends on how stuck the vehicle is, the distance from firm ground, the vehicle weight and how long the pull takes. A simple pull off a curb is quick. A truck buried to the axles in mud takes more time. We quote before we start. Towing in Texas is licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
Common Winch Out Spots in Dallas
- Grass shoulders and medians after rain
- Park lots and soft edges near White Rock Lake
- Dirt lots at job sites and events
- Steep driveways and curbs in older neighborhoods
When a Winch Out Becomes a Tow
If the vehicle has damage after it is pulled out, such as a bent wheel, a leak or a warning light, it should not be driven. We can load it on a flatbed and take it to a shop on the same visit.
Why Choose Dawson for Winch Outs
